Nissan, Chrysler and GM models face safety probe by U.S. regulators

U.S. safety regulators have opened preliminary investigations into consumer complaints about vehicles made by Nissan Motor Co., Chrysler LLC and General Motors that could affect more than 700,000 cars.



A preliminary investigation is the first step in a process that could lead to a recall if regulators determine that a safety issue needs to be addressed by a manufacturer.



The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said its probe into an estimated 440,000 Nissan Altima cars from the 2007 and 2008 model years concerned a possible leak in the brake master cylinder that could reduce the effectiveness of the brakes.



NHTSA said it had received 20 complaints from Altima drivers. Of these, two alleged a reduction in brake effectiveness while 18 reported only illumination of the brake warning light.



The agency said it was also investigating Chrysler's Jeep Wrangler from the 2007 and 2008 model years, potentially affecting 222,500 vehicles, over airbag light illumination indicating an airbag clockspring failure.



A clockspring is a coil under the steering wheel that maintains an electrical connection to the airbag on the driver's side. A broken circuit can mean the airbag will not inflate.



NHTSA said it had received 29 consumer complaints from Jeep drivers. Of these, 23 identified the clockspring wiring assembly as the source of the issue, while the other six only said the airbag light had been illuminated.



Of 14 owners contacted, six said they owned right-hand-drive versions typically used by postal carriers.



A third probe involves GM's 2007 Saturn Aura, potentially affecting 65,105 cars, over a transmission shift cable that could fail, causing the park gear not to fully engage.



The agency said it had received eight complaints alleging that the transmission shift cable had failed, causing the vehicle to roll away, move or accelerate with the shifter in park, or to accelerate in the opposite direction than the driver intended.



NHTSA did not disclose any crashes or injuries in connection with any of the reported problems.



Spokesmen for the three companies said the carmakers were cooperating fully with the investigations.

Infiniti FX 30dS tuned by AHG Sports

AHG Sports, the tuning division of Infiniti Zentrum Hamburg, has a kit that upgrades the Infiniti FX 30dS into a true Porsche Cayenne Diesel competitor.

For €1250, the tuner dials up power on the 3.0 liter V6 diesel unit to 280 PS (206 kW / 276 bhp) and 600 Nm of torque - up substantially from the standard 238 PS (175 kW / 235 bhp) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft).

The tuner then adds a nice 21-inch wheel and tire combination. The 3-piece CC rims from Schmidt Revolution come in size 11 x 21-inch and are wrapped in 295/40R21 tires. Cost of the wheel set is €7,900.

Lowering springs also drop the suspension by 25 mm at a cost of €1,495, installation included.

ASUS Padfone Features, Specs and Review

ASUS is introducing a new concept ASUS Padfone- a phone which gets plugged into a tablet.That is ASUS Padfone,a smartphone with a tablet as an accessory. The tablet has a 10-inch screen where as the smartphone has a 4-inch display with a 5MP rear camera.





With the phone docked, it will recharge automatically and the tablet can also make use of the smartphone’s 3G internet connection. The dual interfaces is capable of delivering activities like video conferencing, web browsing and emailing.



The package consists of two pieces - an Android running ASUS phone which docks inside a tablet when necessary. The smartphone comes with dual-cameras and the tablet will have only a front-facing one, but will be able to use the smartphone’s as its primary rear camera.

New Car: 2011 Porsche 911 Special Edition

Porsche has unveiled yet another special-edition Porsche 911, this time to celebrate 10 years of the company in China.

The car – based on the Porsche Turbo S model – features a gold exterior, 19-inch alloys, carbonfibre bonnet and rear spoiler and 10th anniversary badging on the door sills as well as an individual plaque.

Inside the special 911 gets Alcantara seats with contrasting gold stitching, carbonfibre touches to the dash and new floor mats.

Power remains the same as the standard model, with the Turbo S’s 3.8-litre engine producing 523bhp and 516lb ft of torque, enough to launch the car to 60mph in 3.3sec and onto a top speed of 196mph.

Although pricing hasn’t been announced, numbers for the anniversary model will be limited to just 10 units.

New Car: 2012 Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster

As soon as we learned that Mercedes-Benz had commissioned its AMG performance division to build a Gullwing redux, we knew a convertible version wouldn’t be far behind. For one thing, its progenitor, the 1950s-era 300SL, was offered in both hardtop and roadster varieties (though never at the same time). Each was beautiful in its own right, and both are pricey collectibles today. And Mercedes-Benz itself repeatedly spilled the ragtop beans, at media gatherings that took place before the launch of the coupe, by dropping the yet-to-be-revealed car into a Super Bowl commercial, and by recently offering its own “spy” shots of the car. But only now has the complete body of information on autodom's worst-kept secret, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG roadster, been made public.

There are few surprises. We knew, for starters, that the convertible would be built around an aluminum space frame, just like the coupe. We figured that front hinged-doors and a cloth top would not contribute much additional weight, considering the complex doors and roof-mounted hinges on the coupe. Turns out we were right: At a Mercedes-claimed 3661 pounds, the roadster weighs just 88 pounds more than the company reports for the bewinged car. This is in spite of added bracing around the windshield, the rear axle, and the base of the doors, as well as an additional crossmember to support the fixed roll bars behind the seats. Mercedes-Benz claims that the space frame weighs less than five pounds more than its hardtop counterpart.

The frame for that top is composed of steel, magnesium, and aluminum, with the cloth skin presenting a profile that appears just as sleek as that of the coupe. We expect that shape will work well with the deployable trunk-mounted spoiler to help match the coupe’s high-speed aerodynamics. The three-layer top, which is available in black, red, or tan, may be raised or lowered in a scant 11 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph. Regardless of the top deployment, trunk space roughly matches that of the coupe, at a meager 6.1 cubic feet (versus 6.2 for the coupe).

Something else we knew before the official info release is that the SLS AMG roadster would get the same glorious, AMG-designed, 6.2-liter V-8 as the coupe, sending the same 563 hp at 6800 rpm and 479 lb-ft of torque at 4750 rpm to the rear axle via the same carbon-fiber driveshaft. Likewise, the coupe’s seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle serves as the roadster’s sole gearbox, with four driver-selectable shift modes and a “Race Start” launch-control feature (though we hope that AMG heard our cries for quicker shifts in manual mode). The standard vented and cross-drilled disc brakes and optional two-piece carbon-ceramic discs also are shared with the coupe.

The roadster will offer an optional active suspension with three-mode, driver-selectable adaptive shocks; the options are Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus. According to Mercedes-Benz, the feature will be offered on the coupe in the future, although for now the roadster alone offers this upgrade over the standard suspension (which is already rather capable). With no powertrain changes of consequence, then, the roadster’s minor difference in mass and—presumably—weight distribution may only slightly affect its ability to match the coupe’s 3.5-second 0-to-60 time and 151-foot 70-to-0-mph stopping distance. Of course, we won’t know for sure until we strap our test equipment to it, but for the record, Mercedes-Benz states the SLS AMG Roadster’s 0–60 time as 3.7 seconds, and its top speed as a very breezy 197 mph (same as the coupe).

GM's next big SUVs to carry cost premium to meet fuel-economy rules

Analysts say GM will need to look at powertrain options so they don't detract from the overall fuel economy on its next generation large SUVs.



General Motors' next generation full-sized SUVs likely will carry a cost premium to meet new fuel-economy regulations, an analyst says.



GM said Thursday it will invest $331 million to retool its Arlington, Texas, plant to build the redesigned Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade. The plant builds the current generation of those vehicles.



Although the automaker did not provide a time frame, industry sources say the SUVs will debut in 2013 as 2014 models.



"They will be more expensive to engineer and build because of the need for lighter weight materials," said Tracy Handler, an analyst at IHS Automotive. "I expect prices to be higher."



The fate of GM's full-sized SUVs had been in doubt due to high fuel prices and stricter government rules on fuel economy and emissions.



Overall, large SUV and SUT demand has plummeted after hitting more than 1 million units in 2003 and 2004, according to the Automotive News Data Center. Last year, U.S. sales of the Lincoln Navigator, Toyota Sequoia, Chevrolet Avalanche, GMC Yukon XL and other full-sized SUV and SUTs totaled 372,437units.



While volumes have dropped, analysts say the segment remains profitable.



At one point over the past year or so, industry sources said GM's full-sized SUVs would be dropped, replaced by a range of vehicles developed on GM's front-wheel-drive Lambda platform.



"We have customers who need full-sized SUVs for work and play," Chevrolet spokesman Mike Albano said. "We will continue to provide a vehicle in that segment."



Automakers and regulators are debating a proposal initiated by President Obama last October calling for corporate average fuel economy of 47 mpg to 62 mpg by the 2025 model year.



The latest proposal would start with the 2017 model year, with final CAFE targets to be determined. New federal fuel economy and emissions rules took effect Jan. 1 that require automakers to achieve a CAFE of 35.5 mpg by the 2016 model year.



Handler did not expect GM to drop its full-sized SUVs.



The large SUV "is important for the person who wants to tow, especially in Texas where they want it big. I can't see them abandoning that market," she said.



But she said GM "will need to look at powertrain options so they don't detract from overall fuel economy."



The 2011 Tahoe 1500 and Suburban 1500 achieve 15 mpg city/21 highway for a combined average of 17 mpg. GM also offers a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain on some large SUVs to improve fuel economy.



Last year, Chevrolet sold 75,675 Tahoes and 45,152 Suburbans. During the first four months of 2011, Tahoe sales are up 11 percent and Suburban sales are down 13 percent.



As recently as 2006, however, GM sold 161,491 Tahoes and 77,211 Suburbans.

Sony's bendable OTFT display

Sony's Shows off flexible electronic paper (e-paper) that is driven by OTFT( Organic Thin Film Transistor )display technology behind closed doors at last week's SID conference in LA, including a color unit and the extremely flexible black and white e-paper display seen above, which can be bent to a 5mm curvature radius. The 13.3-inch sheet offers 1200x1600 (150ppi) resolution, 10:1 contrast ratio, 16 shades of gray and is powered by organic TFTs. Sony showed off and bent the thing at the show, reportedly to the cheers of the crowd in attendance.

Peri-Xanthenoxanthene (PXX) was used for the semiconductor layer of the organic TFT. The semiconductor layer and all the insulating layers are manufactured with a spin coating method using solution.It uses E Ink Corp's electrophoretic front plane laminate.

BMW M3 by Vorsteiner

Here's a new wide-body tuning kit for the not-so-new-anymore BMW E92 M3 by American tuner Vorsteiner.

The M3 gets dialed up to 620 bhp (462 kW / 629 PS) and is named the "Canday Cane" due to its red and white color scheme.

That power upgrade comes courtesy of the AA E9X M3 Supercharger Stage II kit as well as the titanium exhaust system supplied by Vorsteiner.

Carbon-fiber body panels fitted to the M3 here include the GTRS3 wide-body kit, a vented bonnet and boot lid.

Wheels are the 20-inch V-309 forged rims wrapped in Michelin PS2 Sport Tires - 285/25/20 and 325/25/20, front and back, respectively.

Porsche Panamera Stingray GTR by TOPCAR

TopCar has released the first details about their new styling package for the Porsche Panamera.

Dubbed the Stringray GTR, the body kit features new bumpers, widened fenders and modified doors. Additionally, there's a new hood, extended side skirts, an aggressive diffuser and a massive rear wing. The GTR kit was created to satisfy client's requests for more aggressive and "charismatic" styling compared to the original Stingray kit.

Besides the styling enhancements, customers can order a bespoke interior and two performance packages for the Panamera Turbo. The first option enables the twin-turbo 4.8-liter V8 to produce over 600 hp (447 kW / 453 hp) thanks to a new intake manifold, a high-flow air filter and a sports exhaust system. Turning things up a notch, there's also a 700 hp (522 kW / 710 PS) package which has more "sophisticated" modifications.

Regardless of the options, the styling package is priced from €45,000 ($63,500) and production will be limited to 25 units.
