Toyota to recall 412,000 cars in U.S.

TOKYO (Reuters) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said today it would recall 412,000 high-end passenger cars in the United States to fix steering problems.

Toyota, which has conducted a string of recalls this year, will recall 373,000 of its 2000-2004 model year Avalon sedans because the steering lock bar in the vehicles could break under certain conditions, it said in a statement.

It will also recall 39,000 of its 2003-2007 model year LX470 sports utility vehicles to eliminate the risk of steering shaft disengagement, the automaker said.

Toyota has received reports of three accidents involving the Avalon models subject to the recall, though there have been no injuries reported, a Toyota spokesman said.

It is not clear if the three accidents are related to the possible defect Toyota is now trying to fix, he said.

There have been no reports of accidents involving the LX470 models subject to the recall, Toyota said.

Prior to the latest recall, the Japanese automaker has recalled 10.8 million vehicles worldwide since late last year.

1998 jeep grand cherokee a/c leak

i have pumped up pressure to high end and low end of the system with nitrogin and cant hear or see leak. i did try to fill system with refridgerant first and it leaked out in a day and a half so it has a big leak but i am so boggled by this. do you have any advice for me

Response:

Replace the Evaporator. Ask any repair shop and they will tell you that the evaporator is the most common problem with the jeep Cherokee’s. This is also why it is difficult to see a leak. You might have to run the Air Conditioning and use a sniffer to prove it since it is buried in the dash.

Ford to ask buyers to pay more for smaller engine in new Explorer

New Ford Explorer

When Ford Motor Co. starts selling its re-engineered Explorer sport-utility vehicle, it will ask U.S. buyers to do something unusual: Pay more for less.

Bucking an automotive tradition of charging extra for more horsepower, Ford will ask buyers of its redesigned 2011 Explorer to pay a premium for a small, 4-cylinder engine when the vehicle goes on sale in December. The Explorer's standard engine will be a 3.5-liter V-6 with 290 horsepower, 53 more ponies than the optional 4-cylinder.

The V-6 version of the new Explorer will have a base price of $28,995, including delivery, or about $1,000 below the current Explorer. The Limited model will have a starting price of $37,995. Pricing on the optional EcoBoost engine, which will be available in early 2011, has not been released.

Ford hopes to convince consumers they should spend to save when it unveils the Explorer at events in New York, Chicago and other locations today. The smaller engine has technology Ford said will give the seven-passenger SUV the same fuel economy as Toyota Motor Corp.'s Camry sedan that gets 19 mpg in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway. That's more than 30 percent better than the 2010 Explorer.

“We really want to make a statement that the old baggage on fuel economy with the Explorer is gone,” Jim Holland, the Explorer's chief engineer, said in an interview. “To get great fuel economy it takes technology, and it's our view that people will pay for that.”

The automaker will be challenged to command a premium for the more efficient engine because U.S. gasoline prices have fallen 34 percent from their peak of $4.11 per gallon two years ago, said Jim Hall, principal of automotive consulting firm 2953 Analytics in Birmingham, Mich.

“Why would you want to pay more for fuel economy when gas prices are going down?” said Hall. “People have very short memories.”

Smallest ever

Ford won't say how much extra it will charge for the smallest engine ever to power an Explorer. Ford charges a $3,000 to $6,000 premium on its Flex model for V-6 engines using the same direct-fuel-injection and turbo-charging technology as the 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder going into the Explorer, Hall said. The Explorer engine is likely to be less because it won't be packaged with all-wheel-drive like on the Flex, he said.

“The market will determine which really is the base engine,” Hall said. “If the market says, ‘Forget it,' they may have to lower the cost of this engine.”

The Explorer's 4-cylinder engine won't tow as much as the V-6, Ford said. The front-wheel-drive, 4-cylinder version that is most fuel efficient will have the least off-road capabilities, traditionally a key characteristic of the model.

Buyers of the Explorer will be willing to make those trade- offs for better fuel economy, Holland said. Ford says poor gas mileage is the No. 1 reason shoppers reject the Explorer, which saw sales fall 88 percent during the past decade, from 445,157 in 2000 to 52,190 last year.

‘More Responsible'

“The impact of rising gas prices has really stuck with people,” Holland said. “People now buy more expensive light bulbs to be more efficient. We're moving to a point where people make the choice to be more responsible.”

The Explorer's improved fuel economy will be central to a marketing campaign that will reach more than 50 million people through social media such as Facebook, said Jim Farley, Ford's global sales and marketing chief.

“Fuel economy is the core truth we have to get at,” Farley said at a recent media briefing on the Explorer. Many of the 140,000 Explorer owners who trade in their SUV annually are “disappointed and want more on fuel economy.”

Wind tunnel

To improve the Explorer's mileage, Ford cut its weight by about 100 pounds by switching the SUV from a heavy pickup-truck frame to the same chassis as the Taurus sedan. Designers also sculpted the shape in a wind tunnel to lower wind resistance.

The Explorer with the 4-cylinder engine will be the most fuel-efficient mid-sized SUV on the market, according to Derrick Kuzak, Ford's product-development chief.

In the 1990s, the Explorer was the top-selling utility vehicle in the U.S. market and earned as much as $10,000 per vehicle for the Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker.

“As goes the Explorer, to some extent, so goes Ford,” Farley said. “It's the backbone of the brand.”

Ford expects to sell more of the new model, especially with optional equipment such as the 4-cylinder engine, Farley said, while declining to reveal a sales goal. Analysts estimate annual sales for the new Explorer may top 100,000 units.

“What's more important than the number we sell is that people see the value and that they're willing to buy the better, more highly equipped versions,” Farley said. “That's the key for us.”

2011 Honda CR-Z

2011 Honda CRZ
It’s true that hybrids are fantastic when it comes to fuel economy. But is it too much to ask for driving enjoyment to go along with bragging rights at the fuel pump? Luckily for us, Honda provided the 2011 CR-Z hybrid with sharp handling to match its miserly fuel consumption. This futuristic-looking 2-passenger coupe is a genuine delight on a twisty road – so long as you don’t put a premium (pun intended) on horsepower.

A 113-bhp 1.5-liter 4-cylinder is coupled to a 13-hp electric motor, whose battery pack is located beneath the cargo floor. The CR-Z is high-tech, but not rapid. Expect a 0-60 mph time of approximately 9 seconds—the same ballpark as many economy cars. Yet the ride and nimble handling make up for the lack of straight-line punch.

On sale in late August, and priced under $20,000 for the base model, the Honda CR-Z hybrid won’t be gathering dust on dealer lots.

Chinese enter U.S. by acquiring U.S. suppliers

After years of breakneck growth at home, China's parts makers are starting to reinvent themselves as global suppliers.

No longer content with shipping parts to North America, Chinese suppliers are acquiring U.S. companies and factories, often at bargain prices. In many cases they want to service North American customers -- particularly General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co., which already do business with them in China.

In early July, for example, Tempo International Group, a Beijing supplier of brake, chassis and powertrain components, and its financial backer, the municipality of Beijing, formed a joint venture called Pacific Century Motors to purchase GM's Nexteer steering components unit for a reported $450 million.

"We want to become a mainstream supplier," Tempo Chairman Tianbao Zhou said in an interview last week at GM headquarters. "We want to blend in to the American culture."

Tempo is following in the steps of Wanxiang Group Corp.

In 1969, Lu Guanqiu, a former apprentice blacksmith, launched a farm tool repair shop with his wife, five partners and $500. Later he started producing universal joints for automakers.

Now his Wanxiang Group Corp. generates global sales of $8 billion a year. Wanxiang is in Hangzhou in China's Zhejiang province, on the eastern coast just south of Shanghai.

In 1994, Lu launched Wanxiang America Corp. in Elgin, Ill. In the late 1990s, the U.S. operation bought five distressed chassis component suppliers, keeping their American management in place.

Lu has continued buying. In 2007, the company purchased a driveshaft operation in Monroe, Mich., from Ford Motor Co.

The company's U.S. sales totaled $1.3 billion last year. At a recent industry event in Detroit, Wanxiang America President Pin Ni said he would consider other acquisitions of distressed suppliers.

Other Chinese suppliers will follow, says C. Peter Theut, the founder of China Bridge, an Ann Arbor, Mich., consulting firm that helps complete mergers of Chinese and U.S. companies. Over the past year, "We've been approached by 12 Chinese companies that want to come West," Theut says. Six were auto suppliers, he says.

Chinese cash

The Chinese generally seek small U.S. companies with niche products and annual sales of $20 million to $150 million. "The Chinese companies will come in with cash and supply the Americans with resources that they couldn't get from U.S. lenders," Theut says.

Although it's unclear how many Chinese automotive suppliers do business in the United States, the Detroit Regional Chamber counts at least 41 in the Detroit area alone. Companies range from small suppliers to the parts units of FAW Group and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp., two of China's largest automakers.

"A number of Chinese suppliers want to get into the North American market," says Wayne County (Mich.) Executive Robert Ficano, who has led six trade missions to China. "And the automakers say, 'If you want to do it in the United States, you need to locate close to us.' "

Typically, these companies start small with a U.S. sales office and perhaps a technical center. After a few years they might start shopping for U.S. factories, says Ficano.

That was Tempo's approach -- financed by a Chinese government body. The Beijing municipal government has set up a $15 billion fund to help local companies, including Tempo, make acquisitions.

"With the support of Beijing, we are trying to take the company to the global stage," said Tempo's Zhou. With 2009 sales of $2.1 billion, Nexteer, of Saginaw, Mich., provides Tempo a platform "to build a much larger company."

Beijing's deep pockets offer Nexteer growth possibilities that it hasn't had in years. In 2006, bankrupt Delphi Corp. put its Saginaw Steering Gear unit up for sale. After Delphi was unable to find a buyer it sold the operation back to GM in March 2009. GM renamed it and put Nexteer up for sale in January.

As Delphi and then GM struggled through bankruptcy, Nexteer was forced to conserve cash. "I had to turn down growth opportunities because we didn't have the capital," said Nexteer President Robert Remenar.

Tempo's negotiations to buy Nexteer went well in part because the Chinese company had a track record on acquisitions. In March 2009, BeijingWest Industries Co. -- a partnership of China's Shougang Corp., the municipality of Beijing and Tempo -- bought Delphi Corp.'s brake operations for $100 million.

The Chinese influx will continue over the next couple of years, Theut predicts. "It's the U.S. suppliers that are so desperate, and the Chinese companies recognize that."

Ford's F-150 pickup will get 3 replacement powertrains

The 2011 Ford F-150 pickup will get three replacement powertrains.

Ford Motor Co. will offer a 3.7-liter V-6 and a 5.0-liter V-8 in the 2011 F-150 pickup when it goes on sale early next year, sources say. Those engines are in the 2011 Ford Mustang.

Also, Ford has announced it will offer a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with EcoBoost turbocharging and direct injection in the 2011 F-150.

All engines will offer 6-speed automatic transmissions, sources say.

The 3.7-liter V-6 will be the standard base engine for the 2011 F-150, sources say, and help Ford market the F-150 pickup to buyers seeking enhanced fuel economy. That engine will have improved horsepower and torque compared with the outgoing 4.6-liter 2-valve V-8 engine that is standard on the 2010 F-150, they say.

Ford hasn't offered a V-6 engine in the F-150 since the 2008 model year, when a 4.2-liter V-6 was offered.

Chief rivals Chevrolet, GMC and Dodge have all continued to offer V-6 engines in their full-size pickups.

Ford spokesman Richard Truett declined to comment on the new engine offerings, other than to say: “We are always looking to broaden the appeal of our products to give consumers the vehicle that best suits their needs."

Ford also offers a 4.6-liter 3-valve V-8 and a 5.4-liter 3-valve V-8 in the 2010 F-150.

The F-150's 4.6-liter 2-valve engine produces 248 hp and 294 pounds-feet of torque at 4,000 rpms. It earns 19 mpg on the highway.

By comparison, the aluminum 3.7-liter V-6 engine generates 305 hp and 280 pounds-feet of torque at 4,250 rpms in the 2011 Mustang. It gets an estimated 31 mpg on the highway for the Mustang.

Ford spent millions of dollars on the new Mustang engines and will reap additional benefits and profits by installing the powertrains in the high-volume F-150 lineup.

A marketing challenge

The EcoBoost will be a unique engine for the F-150 because it will be the first application of EcoBoost on a rear-wheel drive truck for Ford.

But Ford faces a challenge in marketing the EcoBoost to typical pickup buyers who often prefer a V-8 engine, says Mark Grueber, Ford's F-150 marketing manager.

“The EcoBoost is a V-6 and smaller displacement so there is going to be some work that we need to do as marketers to get people into the EcoBoost,” Grueber says.

That work includes advertising the fact that the EcoBoost delivers the same durability and more capability than the current engine offerings. The EcoBoost will also deliver better fuel economy than a standard V-6 and V-8 engine, Grueber says.

“If you can give them both, which is what the EcoBoost will do for us, then I think we've got a real winner,” he says. “The key for us will be verifying the truck passes all of our ‘Built-Ford Tough' durability standards. Some of the capability and fuel economy numbers on the truck will give us credibility with the customer.”

Grueber declined to say how much of a price premium the EcoBoost would carry or what he expects the production mix will look like. He also would not say when Ford will begin advertising it, but Ford starts building the pickup late this year.

Ford will put a 6.2-liter V-8 engine in the off-road Raptor F-150. Ford also has put the 6.2-liter V-8 in the 2011 Super Duty..

Retro style and street-rod flair made PT Cruiser a star

The recipe was simple.

Use an existing small-car platform, mix in some nifty retro styling inside and out, build it in a low-cost country, and command a higher price.

When it made its debut at the 1999 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Chrysler PT Cruiser with its street-rod flair was an immediate sensation.

Americans either hated or loved the little wagon born during the SUV craze. Those that adored it had to have one of their own to cherish.

And it didn't hurt that it went on sale during the U.S. auto industry's biggest sales boom.

The last PT Cruiser rolled off an assembly line in Mexico today, marking the end of one of Detroit's most celebrated product runs in recent years. A Chrysler spokesperson said the last model was stone white and destined for a U.S. dealership.

It wasn't the first retro-styled car to tap into America's penchant for nostalgia. It followed Volkswagen's New Beetle but rolled before the Ford Thunderbird, BMW Mini and Chevrolet SSR.

But the little five-door hatchback certainly has been a soldier, with more than 1.35 million sold worldwide -- generating early waiting lists and fan clubs, spawning imitators in the Mini brand and Chevrolet HHR, and the subject of more special editions than any other vehicle in recent memory.

It was a refreshing new model in an era populated with a lot of redundant designs.

Bob Casey, curator of transportation at The Henry Ford museum in Dearborn, Mich., said the PT Cruiser, unlike the minivan, mixed practical function with attitude.

"Every time I see one I smile," he said. "I can well understand why they sold more than 1 million."

Unlike the Thunderbird and Mini, the PT Cruiser also made retro styling affordable to the masses, regardless of income, without trading away utility.

"It was an ideal single car or second family car," said Erich Merkle, an automotive analyst and president of Autoconomy.com. "For Chrysler, it was a gamble that paid off for 5 to 7 years."

Cash cow

It is the most profitable small car in Chrysler history, according to Bryan Nesbitt, who designed the original PT Cruiser for the old Chrysler Corp. Nesbitt is now a top General Motors Co. designer, while his former employer has since been steered by Daimler AG, Cerberus and Fiat S.p.A.

With the end of the PT Cruiser, Chrysler is retooling the Toluca, Mexico, plant to build the Fiat 500 -- a tiny car to be sold in the U.S. market beginning next year.

The PT Cruiser was originally tapped to join the aluminum Prowler roadster to bolster the ailing Plymouth brand. But when Chrysler planners scrapped Plymouth, the PT Cruiser was spared and christened a Chrysler, eventually becoming one of the brand's top-selling models.

Its offbeat style immediately attracted a variety of buyers -- the young, tuners, entrepreneurs and retirees. Many owners quickly fell in love with its functionality and quirky interior. The wagon's rear seats were removable, allowing the tall interior to stow large cargo.

To keep consumers interested, Chrysler added a convertible version, a woody model and a turbo engine. Special editions -- dubbed Flames, Chrome, Couture and Dream Cruiser -- were routinely added.

But over the years it mostly stayed the same and the novelty slowly wore off.

As with many retro-styled cars, an automaker can paint itself into a corner. Where do you go next?

"Chrysler stopped caring about it and the interior suffered from a lack of upgrades," said Joe Kyriakoza, vice president of marketing for Jumpstart Automotive Group.

But in a testament to its lasting appeal, even in recent years, the PT Cruiser was one of the most researched vehicles in Chrysler's lineup on many online shopping sites.

Annual global sales peaked at 192,000 in 2001, and in the absence of a major redesign, demand dropped to just 25,200 last year. In a nod to the original, the last models are referred to by Chrysler simply as PT Cruiser Classics.

"In the end, it was a hard act to follow because it was a fairly unique," said Casey. "They got it right, right out of the box."

1996 K2500 died while driving and not getting gas

I have a 1996 K2500 4×4 5.7 liter that suddenly stopped running while I was driving. It had to be towed and now I am stumped as to what the problem is. The filter is fine, all fuses have been checked, if I pour gas into the carburator it fires up it is just not getting gas to the carburator. The pump is okay. Anybody have any suggestions as to what I can do to try and get this truck running?

Response:

This should be a Fuel injected engine, and it is going to require lots of fuel pressure. So first thing I would do is put a fuel pressure gauge on it and see where your at. You need to be around 55 to 62 KOEO(key on engine off). If it is less than that, swap out the fuel filter as it can possibly increase if it is clogged. I have gotten as much as 5 more psi doing this. If you are still below the minimum 55 psi, You will need to replace the fuel pump (quite common)

Toyota received complaints about Lexus engine defect in 2007

Toyota Motor Corp. received complaints more than three years ago about engine problems that sparked recalls this week of more than 270,000 Lexus and Toyota vehicles in Asia and North America.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today released Toyota's "Defect Information Report" on the vehicles affected by the recall.

In the report, Toyota said it monitored U.S. field technical reports from March 2007 to August 2008.

"The number of reports of broken valve springs was relatively small, and the vast majority reported abnormal engine noise, rough engine performance, and no start conditions readily noticeable to vehicle operators," Toyota said in the four-page report.

Toyota said it received no reports of any crashes or injuries. But beginning in October 2009, the automaker received an increasing number of reports of "total engine failure" and of broken 3.3 mm diameter valve springs, according to the report.

On July 1, Toyota said it decided to recall the Lexus vehicles following an investigation that found "a possibility that the strength of valve springs with a wire diameter of 3.3 mm may be degraded by a micro-foreign object in the material of the valve spring, causing the spring to break."

NHTSA had no comment.

About 138,000 vehicles in the United States may be affected, according to the Toyota City, Japan-based company.

In Japan, the carmaker received the first customer complaints in March 2007 in Japan regarding defective valve springs that may cause engines to stall, Toyota spokeswoman Ririko Takeuchi said today. The recall in Japan covers cars built between July 2005 and August 2008.

The problem occurs when foreign substances enter the material used to make the part, causing the spring to weaken and break, Tokyo-based spokeswoman Monika Saito said. While Toyota decided to address the problem in August 2008 by altering the design of the valve spring and making it thicker, the company didn't feel that a recall was necessary given the rarity of the problem at the time, she said.

Toyota is working to restore its reputation for quality after recalling about 10.8 million vehicles globally since November. The company recalled about 13,000 Lexus GX 460 sport-utility vehicles in April after Consumer Reports labeled the model a “safety risk” because it could roll over. The designation was removed in May.

The company will recall 91,903 Lexus GS 350, GS 450h, GS 460, IS 350, LS 460, LS 600h and LS 600hL models and some Toyota Crown cars in Japan, the nation's transportation ministry said in a statement on its website yesterday. Recalls have been announced in China and South Korea, and the problem may affect as many as 270,000 vehicles worldwide, Toyota has said.

Toyota received 220 complaints in Japan and 210 from overseas, Saito said. The company decided to initiate a recall after acknowledging a rising trend in the complaints, she said.

U.S. regulators

Toyota, which paid a record U.S. fine of $16.4 million this year for not complying with auto-safety regulations, said last month it will recall the Lexus HS 250h sedan after too much gasoline spilled in U.S. government crash tests, posing a fire risk.
